2020 will go down in history as one of the most challenging years that tested our patience, skills, capabilities and capacities. Both personally and professionally, the year kept us on our toes (not literally considering the lockdowns!).

2021 is here and with it comes new learnings, new vigour and a whole lot of new business challenges and opportunities. If you look at the recent trends in digital marketing, the one thing that no business or brand can deny is the need to create a strong digital presence and use multiple digital marketing avenues to grow and succeed. 

If you look back a couple of years ago, everyone was talking about how artificial intelligence, voice search and marketing driven by data would be ‘the next big thing’. To no one’s surprise, these are no more futuristic but very real, and very present-day trends that brands and businesses are using to grow a stronger digital presence.

Who doesn’t like a personalized digital experience? We know we do! All forms of marketing communication — emails, content, ads and more — need to get even more personalized in 2021. Personalization gives your brand higher credibility and customers are more likely to do repeat business. Statistics show that 80% of customers are more likely to do business with a business that offers a personalized experience. One of my recent personal favourite encounter with personalization has to by Spotify’s 2020 wrapped series.

The last decade has already shown the power of content to market one’s business. With the way customers are consuming content today, it’s more and more important to keep innovating the kind of content you offer. Videos have become a highly popular medium to market one’s business. Product and service videos have shown to increase conversion rates and probably the most popular choice of content for customers looking for products you offer. Video marketing also includes live chats and sessions on social media platforms. 

Influencer Marketing 

The era of influencers still reigns! Influencer marketing is highly beneficial for brands as customers are more likely to connect and resonate with people (influencers). Working with influencers gives you the chance to tap into a wider audience and also build credibility for your products and services. Influencer recommendations are more likely to positively affect conversions as compared to brands recommending their own products.

Visual Search 

I’m most excited to see how visual search will play out in 2021. Just like we type in a word or phrase on Google to get accurate search results, we’ll now be able to just upload an image or click one in real-time to get search results. Google, Pinterest, Bing and many applications are jumping on to the visual search bandwagon and you should start preparing for it as well. The next time you want to buy something you can just take a picture, upload it and get results for similar products, where to buy it, what it is, how it’s used and a lot more!

The marrying of e-commerce and social media — two of the biggest giants in the digital world — has made online shopping very convenient for customers. Customers can directly make purchases through social media without having to go through the hassle of switching to another tab/platform to complete the shopping process. This ease will reduce abandoned carts and allow for a quicker checkout for customers.
