The .COM price hike and its impact on you

After the revised contract was signed between Verisign and ICANN to maintain and manage the .COM registry in 2006, the price for the most popular TLD in the world has increased by $1.35. Come January 15th, 2012, .COM prices will rise once again from $7.52 to $8.03 for every year of registration and renewal, making it a rise of $1.86 or 31% over four years.

With this contract, Verisign has the authority to increase .COM prices by 7% every year with a 6 month notice to its Registrars. Furthermore, a similar contract signed in June this year for .NET allows for a rise of 10%.

These price increases also mean that every Registrar, including us, will be forced to increase our prices, given the razor thin and sometimes unjustifiable margins we work with.

While not increasing prices at all isn’t a viable option for us, we decided to evaluate options where we could improve operational efficiency, cut costs and pass on a smaller percentage of the hike to you.

Thus, with this price hike we’ll be increasing the price of .COM and .NET Domains as follows:

Slab .COM Price .NET Price
Base Slab $9.99 $9.99
Slab 1 $9.79 $9.79
Slab 2 $9.39 $9.39
Slab 3 $8.89 $8.89

As you can see, we’ve tried to ensure that new entrants and smaller providers are able to maintain their profit margins while the big, established providers still get one of the best prices in the industry.

Will this affect your Customers?

Having said the above, I believe this is not going to pinch the end consumer that purchases a single domain or even a couple of them, but will definitely hurt Domainers with 1000s of domains under management. You might also see a preference for ccTLDs for both types of audiences rise slightly (Something you can definitely cash in on with the right marketing efforts).

Another interesting aspect to note and something I’d love your views on is whether this price rise will affect adoption of new gTLDs. Do you think the higher price of .COM Domains will drive Registrants/Domainers to consider new gTLDs more favourably?

How are you going to tackle this?

I have personally been through the previous 3 hikes and have seen our Resellers tackle this in different ways – some increasing their own prices and some not, thereby reducing their existing margins. It’ll be interesting to see how you are going to tackle it this time.

Of course, as Registrars, while we will be passing on this price increase to our Resellers, we’d also like to make sure that you are aware of these facts. Knowing and locking in your current price by renewing NOW can go a long way in helping you stay profitable, especially if you or your Customers have a large portfolio of .COM Domains. I would be glad to address any of your concerns/feedback on this price increase – Do comment and let me know.

Why your .NET domain prices are same as .COM when the registry price for .NET TLD is almost $3 less compared to .COM?

  • http://resellerclub.com Yamini

    Hi Prasad,

We’ve always priced .NET Domains at the same price as .COM Domains to avoid confusion. However, if you’re looking at doing a sizeable volume of .NET Domains, you can get in touch with your account manager and we can work out a better pricing for you.

  • Ehsan

we expect resellerclub as a whole registrar to sell .NET domain at a reasonable price not same as .COM price.
currently we register our .net domains with another registrar that sell .NET for ~7$

  • Sajat

One thing i have not been able to understand is GoDaddy has begun transferring .com at $7.49 which even our lowest cost price is very low.
How can we not get the same low price as them???

  • Khetmal Jain

Ya thats same as prasad question why you people raise the .net domain as same to .com price?????

  • gagandeep dhaliwal

this is strange that Resellerclub charges same price for .net and .com
it should not be volume based, as if the price of .net domains is lower, resellerclub should provide lower price of resellers as well.

and, it should not be decided on case to case basis.

  • Prasad

I can not understand that while there are 30+ TLDs with their own registration, renewal, transfer, promotional prices, why there would be any confusion just with .NET? For a reseller of yours since year 2003 that I know doesn’t see any difference in pricing between .NET and .COM either. If volume is going to make difference, then at least Slab 3 should have different prices, isn’t it? Slab3 consists of those who are generating sizable volume, right?

As a pricing policy, we’ve always maintained .NET Domains at the same price as other gTLDs. While you may understand the pricing structures of all TLDs, a lot of new entrants in this industry do not.
It is a lot easier to compare registrars at a single price point. Keeping the preference of resellers across the globe in mind, we prefer maintaining all gTLDs at a single price point.
Having said that, I do understand that as seasoned providers you would be looking for a more competitive price for .NET Domains which, as I said before, we’re very open to. You can always contact your Account Manager and work out the details for better pricing on .NET.

Sajat, Godaddy doesn’t include the $0.18 ICANN fee when listing this transfer price. Moreover, for a sizeable number of Domain Names, we do offer a very competitive pricing on Transfer-Ins. Do get in touch with your Account Manager if you’re looking at transferring Domains.

  • ZosiHost

i prefer resellerclub just for hosting. domains are more expencive then other registrars. i think that you need to set better prices for slab3, so that we have reason to buy from you.

  • Kasun

Yamini hope you understand that 7.49 + 0.18 = 7.67 Still lower than your price. Also again ResellerClub charged PayPal transaction fee from the Reseller. Can you ever beat that price ?

@ZosiHost – Thanks for your input! Actually, the feedback we’ve consistently received from a majority of our Resellers is that our Domain prices are highly competitive, especially at the higher slabs. Moreover, after the .COM and .NET price hike, our prices are even better compared to the major Domain Registrars. However, if you still feel the same way, you can speak to your Account Manager about target based discounts.

Also. it’s great to know you’re using our Hosting services :) Have you tried out Reseller Hosting yet?

    Hey Kasun,

As I mentioned in my earlier comment, we do offer highly competitive pricing for transfers, especially if you’re looking at transferring in a large bunch of Domains. You can speak to your Account Manager and get transfer-ins at zero markup based on your portfolio. Let me know if you need any more clarification on this.
