‘SSL’ for Starters

Let me go back a little in time…The Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Protocol was first adopted by ‘Netscape’ in 1994 as a response to the growing concern over Internet security. The goal was to create an encrypted data path between a client and a server that was platform or OS agnostic.
Since its inception, the main role of SSL is to provide security for Web traffic including confidentiality, message integrity, non-repudiation and authentication. SSL achieves these elements of security through the use of cryptography and properly authenticated digital certificates.
SSL certificates, therefore, are ‘critical’ for the user to trust a website operating from a server, before sending private information to the server.
Furthermore, with browsers advancing as quickly as they are, very soon every browser would pop up a warning message if a site doesn’t have a digital certificate. I.E. 7 already does that! Whats more, recent studies indicate that a major portion of the customers don’t pay when they see the warning message.
For people who are relatively new to this radically secure technology:
| What exactly is a Digital Certificate? Digital Certificate, also known as SSL certificate (Secure Socket Layer) is the standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a web server and a browser. SSL ensures that all data passed between the web server and browsers remains private and integral. |
Why one MUST have an SSL Certificate? SSL Certificate is a single source to combat all the fraudulent transactions prevailing on the Internet. It not only encrypts all the data which is shared between the client and a server but also helps in gaining the trust of your Customer while purchasing any product from your website. |
Some years back, during our research for the integration of Digital Certificates, we came across several providers who offered certs at cheaper rates, compromising on quality, thus making the entire objective of using a Digital Certificate futile. We finally partnered with Thawte, which is a Verisign Product- the most trusted brand in the industry today!… More on that next time..
Until then…Cheers !!
